WAR OF 1812
The Americans declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812 for a combination of reasons: outrage at the impressment of their soldiers, frustration at British restraints on neutral trade while Britain warred with France, and anger at British alliances with Native Americans. The Americans struggled at the beginning of the war with little navy. The British had the similar advantages as during the Revolutionary War and similar disadvantages. The British blockaded the American ports and this greatly limited the ability of American ships to trade and thusly it hurt the economy.
TREATY OF GHENT
On December 24, 1814 diplomats from America and Britain meeting in Ghent, Belgium signed the Treaty of Ghent. This treaty ended the war of 1812. The final battle, The Battle of New Orleans, was faught after the treaty was signed. This shows how slowly information traveled. Andrew Jackson was the leader at the Battle of New Orleans and he became a national hero after the American won the battle. This would help him later in his presidential campaign. The treaty allowed American ships to freely trade once more and our economy to rise.
